Getting behind the wheel of the Formentor, CUPRA Technical Officer Marta Almuni explained how its impressive driving dynamics are helped by the five different driving modes: “We tried to give it the same feeling as a compact vehicle and with its progressive steering and adaptive chassis we created five driving modes”
One steering wheel, complete command
As you get behind the wheel, the first thing that drivers will notice is the impressive steering wheel, with which you can access the CUPRA Formentor’s driving modes seamlessly.
In fact, almost everything in the Formentor is able to be controlled via the steering wheel, including the ignition. SEAT executive Vice-president for R&D,Dr Werner Tietz explained the impact on the CUPRA’s driving dynamics, saying: “By taking your hands off the wheel as little as possible, driving is very sporty as well as safe. There are also fewer distractions so you can enjoy the road to the fullest.”
Made to feel the asphalt
The bucket seats in the CUPRA Formentor have been similarly designed to help enhance the feeling of being in contact with the road, even with its higher driving position. Almuni explained: “We pay extra special attention to the seats. It was a first step to bringing the emotion of a racing car to a production vehicle. They are the first point of contact with the driver and convey all the sensations of the road.”
The circuit experience on the road
Designed to offer outstanding performance and precision behind the wheel, the CUPRA engineering team worked side by side with CUPRA drivers Jordi Gené and Mattias Ekström, in order to apply their experience on the circuit to the Formentor. According to Almuni, “Another thing we worked on a lot was the adjustments to the chassis, suspension, steering and engine calibrations. The final tests were done with Gené and Ekström who helped us to ensure that the car had the cornering accuracy we wanted and the accelerator pedal reactivity we were looking for.”
After testing the CUPRA Formentor Launch Edition again, Jordi Gené describes his reaction: “The result has been amazing. The steering wheel fully transmits what happens under the wheels and the suspension allows you to always be in control.”
UK specification and pricing of the CUPRA Formentor will be announced on the 20th October 2020, when order books open.
